Town emblem, flower and tree

Town emblem

pic03_1The basic motif of the town emblem is an outer circle representing Okinoshima-cho's initial "O", together with Japan Sea wave crests. These enclose a circular (= ring = harmony) expanse that expresses the town's harmonious development and easefulness of spirit. This white circle expressing the town's radiance combines with the two waves that gently yet powerfully enwrap it to convey images of vibrant interchange and people supporting each other together – strong Oki people who have grown up in Oki – through colors that evoke Oki's beautiful rich natural endowments and ageless history. The whole encapsulates in visual form the concepts for Oki's community development.

Town flower – Oki Rhododendron

pic03_2The Oki Rhododendron is a variety of Rhododendron metternichii, which belongs to the Ericaceae family. An endemic species, this shrub has small leaves and blooms with lovely light pink flowers.
Known as the "queen of flowers" in Oki, it is familiar to many of the island people as the announcer of the full-fledged arrival of spring.

Town tree – Cedar

pic03_3Cedar is a tall evergreen tree of the cypress family. The town's territory has giant cedar trees of the Yaosugi, Kaburasugi, Chichisugi and other varieties. In the Fuse district, they grow in natural clusters.
Cedar is a tree that stands unwavering and enduring through long ages of wind and snow, towering augustly into the sky. This character makes it the tree to represent our town.
